HASTINGS - Saturday's Shrine Soccer Classic was more of an exhibition or scrimmage than an all-out competition, said the South's Aaron Mulgrue of Lincoln Southwest.

That said, Mulgrue took some satisfaction in his team's 2-0 win, and in his goal against Kearney keeper Lance Johnson.

"I didn't score on that goalie all year," said Mulgrue, the match's MVP. "Plus, they knocked us out of state.

"It was nice to get that one, I guess."

The annual benefit for the Shriners Hospitals for Children featured a pair of South victories on the turf at Hastings College.

In the girls match, Bri Exstrom of Lincoln Southwest was the MVP in a 4-0 victory.

Exstrom had two goals and an assist, Omaha Skutt's Stacy Bartels added a goal and two assists and Bellevue East graduate Kelsie Grgurich added a goal.

In the boys match, Skutt's Michael Burke had the assist on Mulgrue's goal. The two are Arsenal United club teammates.

Burke also assisted on a goal by Lincoln East's Cameron Meter.
