Cody Thayer scored in front of the goal with 2.2 seconds remaining in regulation to give Millard West a 2-1 victory against Kearney in the Class A boys state championship Monday night.
OMAHA - Cody Thayer didn't know how much time was remaining in the match Monday when Millard West had one last effort to win in regulation.
"I heard the (announcer counting down from 10), but I couldn't understand," Thayer said. "I knew I had to hurry, though."
Thayer hurried, and the result was a rare soccer buzzer-beater.
Thayer scored with 2.2 seconds remaining in regulation to give Millard West a 2-1 victory against Kearney in the Class A state championship game.
The winning score came on a throw-in near the goal. Kearney keeper Lance Johnson came out of the goal to make the save, but the ball bounced near the goal and Thayer kicked it into the net.
Kearney took the lead in the 62nd minute on a shot by Brady Roeder from 30 yards. It was his first goal of the season.
Millard West answered on a free kick by Brian Kudron five minutes later. Millard West scored two goals on Kearney in 12 minutes, something no team had accomplished.
"The goals Millard West has scored in the tournament have been on free kicks, corner kicks and long throw-ins," Kearney coach Scott Steinbrook said. "The game winner was a long throw-in that just kind of got deflected around in the box. I didn't even see who finished it, but whoever it was they were in the right place at the right time."
