The Nebraska School Activities Association’s Board of Control voted Wednesday to play the 2009 state championship football games on Nov. 23 and 24 at Memorial Stadium.

In the past, the NSAA has played the title games on the third Thursday, Friday and Saturday in November when Nebraska has had an open week before the Colorado game, traditionally played on the day after Thanksgiving. The Huskers, however, have a home game against Kansas State on Nov. 21 next season, meaning the high school games had to be pushed back to the Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week.

NSAA executive director Jim Tenopir said three games a day will be played in the championship round next season, but no specific schedule has been determined. The board also decided to play the 2010 finals on the same corresponding Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 22 and 23) even though the Huskers are on the road at Texas A&M on the previous Saturday.

In other action, the board adopted restrictions regarding four-team basketball tournaments beginning with the 2009-10 season. All games in a four-day event must be completed within a seven-day period with no other regular season games in between. The board did put in an exception for weather-related delays.

In a hearing Wednesday, the board ruled against Lincoln Northeast’s request to allow freshman swimmer Mollie McNeel to train with her club program during the high school season. In club, McNeel specializes in distance events much longer than the 500-yard freestyle, the longest high school event. Training with her club would allow her to stay in shape for the more grueling events.

NSAA rules permit swimmers to work 1-on-1 with their club coaches during the high school season but do not allow them to participate in club team practices.
