Danny Lasoski led throughout the race to claim his first victory since 2004.
EAGLE - Danny Lasoski of Dover, Mo., led all 40 laps of the World of Outlaws Eagle Nationals A feature Saturday night to win for the first time since 2004.
Qualifying began about 45 minutes behind schedule due to a persistent drizzle at Eagle Raceway, but the result was a fast racing surface. Sammy Swindell of Bartlett, Tenn., broke the track record with a 11.076-second lap on the one-third mile track - an average speed of 119.094 mph, eclipsing Joey Saldana's 11.124 mark set in 2002.
Lasoski, the second-fastest qualifier of the night won the eight-lap pole dash and started inside the front row of the A feature.
The fast surface left drivers little choice but to hug the inside groove. Lasoski jumped to a half-straightaway lead over Joey Saldana, with Swindell close behind. As the field entered lapped traffic, Swindell found what little room Saldana left in turn two and slipped past for second.
The leaders bunched up briefly behind the lapped car of Ryan Anderson, allowing Swindell to close in. But once he negotiated the traffic, Lasoski was untouchable, cruising to his first win since June 20, 2004.
Three-time and defending World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz of Minot, N.D., pulled out with motor problems on lap 15, stopping on the track to bring out the only caution of the race.
In the 360 sprint division, race leader Zach Davis of St. Joseph, Mo., flipped into the turn three catch fence on the fourth lap. Late in the contest, Council Bluffs, Iowa, driver Jeff Griffis crashed in turn four. Paramedics initially deemed his injuries life threatening and called for helicopter airlift. Griffis was conscious and talking as he was flown out.
The race was called and Gene Ackland was declared the winner.
Griffis was treated and released early Sunday morning, car owner Dennis Parker said in a post at dirtdrivers.com. Griffis suffered a concussion.
The scheduled IMCA Modified A feature was postponed until Saturday July 11.
