Don Hogue turned a standard college contact into a one-day camp for linemen and the benefits are noticeable.
Hogue's Falls City football team returned just one starter in the offensive line, so when Peru State offensive coordinator Dick Ramsey called to see if the Tigers had anyone interested in going to Peru State, Hogue decided to tap into that well of knowledge.
"Dick and I go way back since both of us are Dawson-Verdon graduates. I told him last spring that I had a good class of juniors and then asked if they could help us out," Hogue said. "Dick and Lou Varley came over and did a one-day lineman camp."
It was basic and just what was needed, since Bubba Gay was the only lineman with experience.
"They went back to freshman orientation kind of stuff, with the proper stance and getting your weight in the right position," Hogue said. "Then they shared some ideas of how they do things and they just did a great job. It also made me and my assistants think about focusing every single day on fundamentals."
Gay is joined in the offensive line by Jared Yoesel, Austin Campbell, Jake Baxter and Josh Murphy. Their improved work has allowed running back Dakota Schulenberg to nearly double his output of the entire season last year.
"Dakota ran for about 500 yards as a sophomore behind a good senior line but last year, he went through injuries and only had about 400 yards," Hogue said. "He's stronger and quicker, but you also have to give credit to the offensive line."
Schulenberg has already rushed for 782 yards and 10 touchdowns. Last week, he ran for 270 yards. That production has helped the Tigers to a 3-1 record. Last year at this time, Falls City was 1-3.
"We have had more success. But going through a 1-7 season last year makes the kids realize we could still have some of the adversity we faced last year," Hogue said. "We already lost quarterback Michael Huettner. Jake Babb moved from tight end to quarterback and he's done a good job."
Out of that adversity also came something good for Hogue and the Tigers.
"Michael missed three days after surgery, but he's been at every practice and game since then," Hogue said. "He writes down all our plays and formations, so I can scout myself. I can see what opponents look at.
"He know the offense and he's been very involved. I check with him as the game is going on to see our tendencies. I call him my student assistant."
The Tigers will travel to Milford, also 3-1, Friday night.
