HASTINGS - It was only the next-to-last time that Brett Kaczor would line up under center, but nonetheless, the former Ewing quarterback gave a memorable performance in Saturday's Sertoma Eight-Man All-Star Classic.

Kaczor ran for 133 yards, four more than the game's previous record, and passed for 166, only two shy of another mark, in leading the West to a 32-22 win in the rain at Hastings College.

Kaczor will play quarterback once more when he leads Nebraska against a team of Kansas eight-man all-stars next weekend at Fort Hays State. After that, it's on to Nebraska Wesleyan, where the 5-foot-11, 190-pounder expects to play free safety.

"Defense, you could say, is my specialty," Kaczor said. "I love offense, but it would be hard to never hit somebody on defense again."

It certainly wasn't difficult for Wauneta-Palisade coach Randy Geier to keep the football in the hands of his greatest weapon.

Of the West's 40 snaps in the first half, Kaczor ran 14 times, tossed 13 passes and punted twice. He finished with 29 rushes and 20 pass attempts, just missing records in both categories.

The West never trailed after overcoming an early 8-0 hole. Kaczor, who three times hit passes to convert on fourth-and-long, capped the first half with a 15-yard TD rumble, ran for another score and also passed for a touchdown to easily win offensive MVP honors.

Derek Classen of Humphrey St. Francis was the East's offensive MVP for rushing for two scores and tossing a record-setting 70-yard TD pass to Hampton's Dwayne Wall to open the scoring.

Defensive MVPs were Tyler Bartak of Anselmo-Merna (West) and Michael Konicek of Clarkson (East).
