CRETE — The play didn’t go exactly as planned, but the result was much better than expected.

On the second play of the South Shrine Bowl team’s scrimmage Sunday at Doane College, Dex Schwieger of Aurora leaped to pull in a pass from John Dostal of Omaha Gross for a 39-yard gain.

“That wasn’t how it was supposed to go. I ran a little deeper and so he just threw a jump ball,” said the 6-foot-5 Schwieger. “I think after that, everyone realized we were playing.”

Schwieger’s catch was the only completion of the scrimmage for South quarterbacks, although Dostal and Cody Linder of Plattsmouth both showed their scrambling abilities.

Dostal raced 11 yards to pick up a first down, and when Linder took over, he had runs of 15 and 22 yards.

Those came on the first two possessions by both the red and white offenses. Then the defenses got stingy, recording seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage. On the final set of plays, future Husker walk-on Jeremy Wallace of Omaha Bryan plowed his way for 16 yards on three carries, and Marcus Smith of Crete broke two tackles for a 19-yard pickup on the final play of the scrimmage.

“In practice, the offense can perfect their timing. The defense needed some time to get rolling,” said J.D. Stone of McCook. He tackled Wallace for no gain on one play and then helped Jared Evridge of Papillion-LaVista South corral a double reverse for a 10-yard loss.

“We had some things in to make the game fun for the kids,” said coach Bob Fuller of Plattsmouth. “We ran a lot of stuff, which was impressive since this was only our second day in pads.

“That Wallace is a big, hard runner. At 225 or 230 pounds, he gets going downhill pretty fast.”

After the scrimmage, the South team serenaded Sam Meginnis of Lincoln East for his 19th birthday.
