1994 Flashback: Nebraska 45, Kansas 17

Posted: Friday, November 5, 2004 6:00 pm

Kansas lined up eight and nine defensive players close to the line of scrimmage against the Huskers, who had just taken over the No. 1 ranking.

The Jayhawks planned to bring all 11 defenders some times against the Husker offense. Sure enough, the first play of the game, KU broke through and sacked Nebraska's Brook Berringer.

About 15 minutes later, Nebraska had six touchdowns, including a 64-yard bomb from Berringer to Clester Johnson and a 51-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Baul.

By the end of the first half, Berringer had thrown for 249 yards. Nebraska hadn't thrown for 250 yards in a game since 1976.

Berringer finished with 267 yards passing while completing 13 of 18 attempts against Kansas.

"It was a perfect day for football," Berringer said after the game. "The only thing I think it (the weather) would be better for is quail hunting, and I'll take care of that tomorrow.

"It's still a matter of moving the offense, getting the job done. Nothing spectacular. I haven't proven anything yet. So don't ask."

"When you think about our offense passing like that, it's really got to screw up the defensive coaches we face," Nebraska defensive coordinator Charlie McBride said.

After the air attack in the first half, Lawrence Phillips led Nebraska to 201 yards rushing in the second half.

The Huskers improved to 10-0 with the win on Nov. 5, 1994, marking the 17th time in school history NU had won at least 10 games in a season. With only Iowa State and Oklahoma left, talk of NU playing Miami in the Orange Bowl and  unbeaten and No. 2 Penn State playing a weak Pac-10 team in the Rose Bowl started talk about a playoff or a national championship game of some sort.
