Nicholls State Notebook, 9/9: Colonels set to play first Big 12 foe

The Colonels (1-0) have never played a Big 12 Conference school and have had just 14 games against NCAA Division I-A competition. Their only victory in those 14 games came against Arkansas State (28-22) in 2001.

“This is the biggest stage that Nicholls has ever been on,” coach Jay Thomas said, “and our guys are excited to perform.”

BOGGAN MAKES EARLY IMPACT: Junior defensive back Jermaine Boggan was named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his role in last Thursday’s 35-0, season-opening win against Southern Arkansas. Boggan intercepted two passes and scored a special-teams touchdown recovering a failed punt attempt in the end zone.

— SANCTIONS HURT COLONELS: Nicholls State currently has 58 scholarship players — five below the Division I-AA limit — as the result of three-year sanctions placed on the school. In May of 2005, the NCAA determined that an assistant coach and academic adviser did illegal correspondence work for players. The infraction cost former head coach Darryl Daye his job.
