Former Husker football player and assistant coach Jeff Jamrog could be making a return to the Nebraska athletic department.
Currently the head coach of Minnesota State-Mankato, Jamrog met with his team on Monday night to discuss the possibility of him leaving to fill an administrative position for Nebraska.
NU is currently without an assistant athletic director for football, a position Tim Cassidy announced he was vacating on Nov. 30. Cassidy took a similar job at Texas A&M.
“Jeff has apprised me that he’s been contacted by the University of Nebraska about an opportunity there,” Minnesota State athletic director Kevin Buisman said on Tuesday. “Clearly, there’s a level of mutual interest.”
Buisman said Jamrog told his team on Monday night that he “expected some things would transpire in the next 24 to 36 hours.”
Jamrog was a three-year letterwinner as a defensive end at Nebraska from 1985-87. He later returned as an assistant under Frank Solich from 2000-03.
He has connections with new Husker coach Bo Pelini and many of the guys who seem likely to be on his staff.
Jamrog has coached with Pelini, his brother, Carl Pelini, Barney Cotton, Ron Brown, Marvin Sanders and Mike Ekeler.
Ekeler and Carl Pelini both served as defensive coordinators under Jamrog at Minnesota State. Jamrog has compiled a 17-27 record in four seasons at the Division II school. The year before he arrived, the Mavericks didn’t win a game.
“I think there are certain things outside of Jeff’s control right now. He’s dealing with a situation that’s pretty fluid there,” Buisman said. “Obviously, they have millions of priorities and issues to attend to. He’s got to just be patient with the process as it plays itself out.”
