— Brian Nichols, Johnson: “If it wasn’t for the defense, this game would have been pretty much gone. It was pins and needles. Pins and needles. You didn’t know what was going to happen. When (Nebraska) blocked that field goal, that was a huge, huge relief.

Congrats to Frankie (Solich) for pulling this one off last week against these guys. … Coach Solich, it was wrong for him to leave. It was wrong for him to be fired. I think everybody misses him.”

— Teri Lewison, Lincoln: “One of the best games I’ve ever been at, at least the finish was. I’ve never heard the stadium so loud as it was on the last drive. My hands were shaking. I think they’re still shaking.”

— Paul Vinton, Greenwood: “I’m very nervous, very nervous. I don’t think we can keep up with everybody (in the Big 12) the way we’re going on offense.”

— Cathy Sandy, Indianola, Iowa: “I thought it was a great game. That kick made it exciting, but I was glad Nebraska won. I thought we’d block the kick. Our defense is really good.”

— Marc Duncan, Omaha: “The defense played their (butts) off. The offense owes them. There’s a reason the stadium was chanting for the defense after the game. This was their win.”

— Wesley Koteski, Pittsburgh (Pitt alum): “It’s kind of scary what’s going on with Dave Wannstedt. To be honest, he’s not that successful of a coach. … He went to the Chicago Bears: Unsuccessful. He went to the Miami Dolphins: Unsuccessful. As a Pitt Panther: 0 and 3. So until ‘The Stache’ proves something we’ll have to wait and see.”

— Jeff Ingalls, Shelton (summing it up for Husker fans): “I was just hoping they didn’t have a good kicker.”
