Nebraska baseball pitchers Charlie Shirek and Mike Harmelink were arrested and cited by UNL police for vandalism early Friday morning and subsequently suspended by coach Mike Anderson from this weekend’s three-game series against Texas.
Anderson said there could be further discipline, but that he wouldn’t comment further until Monday. Earlier this season, Harmelink served a three-game suspension after being arrested on a DWI charge on Feb. 22.
“This is where my focus is right now and where it will be all weekend,” Anderson said less than two hours before the start of Friday’s contest.
According to a UNL police spokesman, a witness observed two males vandalizing a bicycle near Avery Hall around 2 a.m. Friday. Campus police later contacted the men on the north side of Memorial Stadium, and the witness identified the responsible parties.
The damage to the bicycle was estimated at $250. The rims were bent and the seat broken off.
In addition, the players were admitted to detox, according to the police report. One of the player’s blood-alcohol content measured .176, the other .158.
The arrests occurred less than 17 hours before Nebraska began a crucial series against the Big12-leading and fourth-ranked Longhorns at Haymarket Park.
Shirek, a sophomore right-hander from Minot, N.D., has a record of 2-5 with a 6.92 ERA. He was removed from the weekend rotation last week.
Harmelink, a senior right-hander from Omaha, is 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA.
