The Huskers really aren’t that picky about which Britt wins soccer games for them.

On Wednesday, with star senior Brittany Timko out of the lineup, it was freshman Brittney Lanier who scored the game winner in NU’s soggy 3-2 victory against Loyola-Chicago at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

“I guess people were a little bit nervous with Britt gone,” said Lanier, who poked in a loose ball from close range at 79:50. “It is good for our confidence to know that we can win without her.”

Timko is in Korea with the Canadian World Cup team this week, so head coach John Walker got to tinker with his lineup a little bit Wednesday. After a rough start — Loyola-Chicago took a 2-1 lead at 27:07 — NU settled down to control play the rest of the game.

“Obviously, the first half, a couple of big errors, which we have to avoid,” Walker said. “But I thought overall as a team we played well. We competed well. We played with a lot of passion. We got contributions from a lot of different players.”

Jessie Goodell and Aysha Jamani scored the other two goals for Nebraska, both in the first half. The Huskers outshot the Ramblers 26-8 (9-4 in shots on goal) while improving to 10-6-3. Loyola-Chicago is 11-6-3.

NU’s next competition will come next week at the Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio. Walker said Texas A&M will be the team to beat, but he’s prepared for anything.

“After that, it’s just very, very tight,” he said. “This (Husker) group is an interesting group. I think every game we play, we have a chance to win.

“We need to keep winning. We need to go to San Antonio and try to win the Big 12 Tournament. That’s the easiest outlook.”
