Nebraska football recruit Major Culbert, whose scholarship was suspended in May, will join the Husker program and report for fall camp Aug. 2.

NU coach Bill Callahan reinstated Culbert’s scholarship Tuesday after meeting with Culbert and his family, saying Culbert has agreed to a series of “stringent requirements.”

Culbert was arrested and charged with first-degree sex abuse and first-degree burglary in May but reached a plea bargain earlier this month, accepting lesser charges of trespassing and harassment. Culbert, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound safety from Harbor City, Calif., and Marvin Johnson of Compton, Calif., were accused of sexually assaulting two female University of Oregon students in an off-campus dormitory during a mid-January recruiting trip to Eugene, Ore.

“The charges against Major in Oregon have been reduced to a misdemeanor, but we take this situation very seriously,” Callahan said. “We have granted him a second chance to be a part of our program, and accordingly he will operate under a zero-tolerance policy from this point forward. We believe his willingness to accept these terms reflects positively on his character and commitment to focus on academics and athletics while here at Nebraska.”

As part of the plea bargain, Culbert was sentenced to five years probation and 25 days in jail. Lane County, Ore., deputy district attorney Bob Gorham said Culbert can serve his sentence next summer and would have options of work crew, work release and electronic monitoring.

Callahan said Culbert will participate in extensive Life Skills sessions with the entire football team during fall camp, and also will perform community service in Lincoln as part of his scholarship agreement.

“I am confident he will respond in a positive manner and be a first-class member of our football team and our community,” Callahan said.

Gorham said the two victims suggested the lesser charges. Johnson also reached a plea bargain on lesser charges and will attend Oregon this fall.

“They wanted (Culbert) and Marvin to have a chance to finish college,” Gorham said. “That was pretty nice of them.”
