Former Husker Duensing helps U.S. win baseball World Cup

Former Husker and Minnesota Twins prospect Brian Duensing pitched 42/3  innings on Sunday, helping the United States win its first baseball World Cup since 1974 with a 6-3 win against Cuba in Taipei, Taiwan.

The win snapped Cuba’s streak of nine straight titles.

Duensing was nearly perfect through the first three innings, yielding just one hit. He struck out two and was chased off the mound in the fifth after Cuba scored two runs.

SOCCER: Top-ranked Grand Valley State ended Nebraska-Omaha’s 11-game unbeaten streak and its season Sunday with a 1-0 decision in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals in Mankato, Minn. The Lakers’ Katie Johnson converted a corner kick by Sue Christenon 8:41 into the contest, closing a 655-minute, 3-second shutout string by the Mavericks. UNO finishes it’s season at 14-6-1. … Stephen Brust’s goal in the 89th minute helped lead Bradley past seventh-ranked Creighton 1-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship match in Omaha. For the Bluejays, defenders Seth Sinovic and Sergio Castillo joined goalkeeper Matt Allen on the All-Tournament Team. The 48-team NCAA tournament field will be announced today.

RIFLE: Sophomore Amanda Jeffries finished second in smallbore, but the Nebraska rifle team wasn’t able to capitalize, losing to defending NCAA champion Alaska-Fairbanks at the NU Rifle Range on Sunday. The Huskers posted a score of 4,614 to UAF’s 4,654.

Jeffries posted a 578 in smallbore for her second-place finish, in addition to a sixth-place showing in air rifle (582). Senior Katie Harrington had a strong day in air rifle as Nebraska’s highest finisher in fourth place (585), followed by freshman Elisha LaFond’s fifth-place (583) showing. Sophomore Christine Costello also placed fourth in smallbore with a 574. 

* TENNIS: Lincoln's Jack Sock won the 16-and-under boys singles title at the Missouri Valley Sweet 16/Segment 3 Tennis Championships Sunday, defeating Max Helgeson of Overland Park, Kan. 6-2, 6-2 in the finals at the Woodside Tennis Club at Shawnee Mission, Kan. The unseeded Sock, a high school freshman who lives and trains at the Mike Wolf Tennis Academy in Kansas City, routed top-seeded Travis Neilson of Overland Park, Kan. 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. Sock upended Nebraska's Class A state high school champion, Omaha Burke freshman Jackson Withrow, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
