The second-ranked Nebraska wrestling team showed on Sunday that, sometimes, 24 hours can make all the difference.
One day after a sometimes sluggish performance in a dual against unranked Rider, the Huskers rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win six straight matches and crush No. 16 Hofstra 25-10 in Hempstead, N.Y.
Coach Mark Manning said his team’s focus and energy were back on track after slipping in some spots on Saturday after a long trip to the East Coast.
“The kids did great job today,” Manning said. “Stephen Dwyer, Jordan Burruoghs, Brandon Browne, they all wrestled with guts and determination.
“Our kids did a good job traveling and this is a tough trip. They did a good job being patient today.”
After Chris Oliver’s loss by technical fall at 157 pounds, NU ran off six straight wins — including two major decisions and a pin — to take a 21-4 advantage that virtually clinched the dual victory.
Tenth-ranked Dwyer started the string with a decision at 165, but fifth-ranked Brandon Browne needed three takedowns in the third period to rally to defeat No. 6 Alton Lucas 8-6 at 174 and give the Huskers a 6-4 team lead.
At 184, ninth-ranked Vince Jones, who had struggled recently, scored a pinfall and No. 7 Craig Brester added another big win at 197, beating No. 10 Joe Rovelli 10-3.
No. 17-rated Jon May’s win at heavyweight, coupled with Paul Donahoe’s win over No. 13 Dave Tomasette at 125 put the Huskers ahead 21-4.
Hofstra took the next two matches, but couldn’t score the bonus points needed to stay in the match.
Lou Ruggirello, ranked sixth nationally at 133, controlled the match against NU’s No. 8 Kenny Jordan in a 6-0 decision. Then, two-time All-American Charles Griffin needed a late takedown to stop NU’s 15th-rated Mike Rowe at 141.
Burroughs, ranked eighth at 149, ended the match with a major decision win.
That puts the Huskers at 14-2 heading into next Sunday’s 2 p.m. dual at No. 7 Iowa State. A win would give Nebraska its first sweep of conference opponents in the 98-year history of the program.
