Miller day-to-day with shoulder strain

Cookie Miller watched a short portion of Monday’s practice while gingerly riding a stationary bike.

“Sore,” Miller said, when asked how he felt. “Real sore.”

A relatively good report from the doctor didn’t ease the physical pain for Nebraska’s freshman point guard.

Miller, helped off the court with six minutes remaining in Saturday’s game at Texas A&M, has a severely sprained shoulder. His status is day-to-day.

Nebraska men’s basketball coach Doc Sadler said an MRI on Monday revealed no major damage, and that no surgery is needed. The injury is to Miller’s right,  shooting shoulder.

“There’s no break or anything like that,” Sadler said. “No dislocation, no popping it back in place. No any of that stuff.”

It’s uncertain when Miller could return, although Sadler said it’s doubtful he’ll play Wednesday, when Nebraska hosts Oklahoma

“I don’t expect him to play Wednesday, but if he shows up Wednesday and the doctors OK him to play, he’ll play,” Sadler said. “But I don’t think that will happen.

“Any time you get an injury like that, it’s like anything else, like a sprained ankle. A lot of it’s going to have to deal with how much pain he can play with.”

Without Miller, sophomores Sek Henry and Jay-R Strowbridge will see most of the minutes at point guard. Sadler wouldn’t say for certain who would start.

“Don’t know that yet,” Sadler said. “I think you’ve got so many rotations. The reason Jay-R hasn’t been playing the point as much is that he injured his ankle. He hasn’t had the quickness and the speed that he had early in the year.

“It’s getting healthier. It’s feeling better. But he still doesn’t have the speed or quickness that he had prior to Christmas.”

Henry replaced Miller on Saturday and made two key three-pointers late, helping the Huskers upset No. 22 Texas A&M 65-59.

Henry said he’s comfortable playing point guard but that he’d rather have Miller, the team’s leader in assists and steals, in the lineup.

“Cookie is a big part of our team, and we really need him right now,” Henry said. “The quicker he gets back, that will be better for us.”
