The New York Yankees are expected to call up Joba Chamberlain in time for Tuesday night’s 6:07 (CST) game at Toronto.
Barring an incredible game from starter Roger Clemens, Chamberlain will pitch in relief, making him the second Lincoln native on a current major-league roster.
Former Husker teammate and Royals third baseman Alex Gordon is in his first season in Kansas City.
This marks the first time since 1920 that two players born in Lincoln are in the majors at the same time. Pug Griffin and Les Mann played together from 1917-1920.
According to the New York Post, Chamberlain flew to Toronto on Monday and will be in the Yankees’ bullpen tonight. The club planned to have the 21-year-old right-hander for Monday’s game against the Blue Jays but passport paperwork caused a delay.
In 88 1/3 innings, Chamberlain fanned 135, walked 27 and allowed 62 hits in Single-A, Double-A and Triple-A.
