The Lincoln Saltdogs, coming off the best season in their six-year history, were honored Wednesday as the organization of the year by the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.
“We’re pretty proud,” said team president Charlie Meyer. “It kind of put the finishing touches on our best season.
“Other than winning the championship, from our standpoint, it’s pretty gratifying.
“It’s been a special season.”
The Saltdogs (65-31) won the first- and second-half titles in the American Association’s North Division. They were eliminated by St. Paul in the North Division playoffs.
Lincoln’s Tim Utrup was honored as the league’s top general manager for the second time in his six years with the Saltdogs.
“Tim is one of the best in the business,” Meyer said.
The honors were based on a vote of league coaches and media members.
“To be named organization of the year in the inaugural season of the American Association is an honor we hold in high regard,” said team chairman Jim Abel. “While we didn’t reach our goal of winning a championship, 2006 was a special season for us, and we know that this league has a great future.”
