The Omaha Royals are donating more than $2,600 for flood relief in four Iowa cities.
The money comes from tickets sold at the Royals’ game Saturday against the Memphis Redbirds. The Royals announced last week they would give 50 cents from every ticket sold to flood relief efforts.
More than $2,500 was raised from ticket sales to Saturday’s game. An anonymous $100 donation brought the total to $2,661.
BASKETBALL: Creighton men’s assistant coach Mike Maker has resigned to take the head coaching job at Williams College in Massachusetts. Williams is a Division III school that has won the Director’s Cup for overall athletic performance for 10 straight years. … Shane Larson has been named the head women’s basketball coach at Dana. He has spent the last two years as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at Fort Hays State in Kansas. Larson replaces Brenda Mechels, who stepped down in May after six seasons. … Nebraska men’s basketball players Paul Velander, Nick Krenk and Cole Solomon were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court.
GOLF: Nebraska golfers JC Stevenson, Kate White and Allison Stewart were named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American scholar team. Stewart, who graduated in May, became just the second golfer in school history to be named a four-time NGCA Scholastic All-American. It was the second straight award for Stevenson and White. … Lincoln’s Anna Christenson will face Megan Bartlett of Grand Island in today’s final of the Women’s State Match Play Championship at the Norfolk Country Club. Christenson, who graduated from Lincoln East in June, defeated Pius X girls golf coach Steph Kolbas 4 and 2. Bartlett defeated Husker JC Stevenson 2 and 1.
TRACK: Incoming Nebraska freshman Jessica Furlan advanced to the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Furlan, who will run cross country and track, posted the 12th-best time in the two-heat preliminary.
