FORT HARTSUFF, Neb. - Leaders of Friends of Fort Hartsuff in central Nebraska will be holding a meeting to gather ideas for how to protect and save the historical park.

The meeting will be held Tuesday at the Resource Conservation & Development office in Ord.

The group leaders recently had talks with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission director, Rex Amack.

The commission is cutting Fort Hartsuff's budget about 15 percent.

Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park, which includes nine original buildings, is about eight miles south of O'Neill.

The state historical society says the fort was active between 1874 and 1881, providing protection for both settlers and some American Indians.
