OMAHA — An Omaha woman says her repeated complaints of mold in her apartment went unheeded — until she found a mushroom growing from her carpet.
Jessica Roccaforte says she complained to apartment managers about mold, but says they and maintenance workers denied there was problem. Instead, they painted over mold stains.
When she found a mushroom growing from her carpet, she called the city housing inspector.
Chief housing inspector Kevin Denker says it’s rare for a moisture problem to get so bad that mushrooms can grow.
Denker’s office cited the apartment owners and posted a sign saying the apartment is unsafe for human occupancy.
The apartments’ corporate manager says a civil engineer has been hired to fix the problem.
Roccaforte and her baby now live in a new apartment in the same complex.
