A Sunday morning traffic stop led to the arrests of two Omaha residents, who Saunders County authorities say may be part of an identity theft ring.
The deputy who made the traffic stop found more than 100 stolen checks, more than 100 pieces of unopened mail and correspondence, completed tax returns, altered and forged checks and equipment to make false identification, Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz said.
“They had over 1,000 pieces of mail and correspondence in their possession,” he said.
Authorities also found methamphetamine in the vehicle, which was stopped around 2 a.m. Sunday a few miles north of Wahoo on Nebraska 109.
“They had been involved in some suspicious activity,” Stukenholtz said, “and they were stopped for a traffic violation.”
The sheriff declined to name the two individuals, citing an on-going investigation with Douglas County authorities.
However, he said, the two people arrested were a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman. No court date has been set for their arraignment.
The man was in Saunders County Jail on Monday and the woman was transferred to the Washington County Jail.
