SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A 14-year-old boy who was the last child abandoned in Nebraska under the state’s old safe-haven law is being sent back to California.

The boy, from Davis, Calif., was left at the Kimball County Hospital late Friday afternoon by his mother, who drove to Nebraska.

He was the 36th child left at a Nebraska hospital since the law took effect in July. Many of them were preteens or teenagers as old as 17.

The old law had no age limit, which Nebraska lawmakers remedied Friday by adding the limit of 30 days. The change took effect Saturday.

A Yolo County, Calif., spokeswoman for social services says Nebraska and Yolo County officials decided Monday that the boy should be returned to have his needs assessed.
