OMAHA — A 24-year-old Peace Corps volunteer from Omaha has been killed in an accident in Vanuatu, an island nation in the south Pacific Ocean.
The Peace Corps says a student at a school was cutting branches from a tree Thursday when a branch fell and struck John Roberts. He died instantly, and a member of the community also died.
Roberts was about a month from finishing his time with the Peace Corps.
His father, Doug Roberts told KETV that his son graduated from Westside High School in 2001 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2005.
The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday and the director of the Peace Corps will speak.
Vanuatu is about 1,100 miles east of Australia.
