OMAHA — A man is dead following a shooting near Omaha, and a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy is on administrative leave.

Sheriff Tim Dunning says his office got a report of a suicidal gunman late Monday night.

Dunning says deputies found 36-year-old Jason Welsh in his basement, threatening to kill himself.

Dunning says several shots were fired around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after authorities had been negotiating with the man for more than two hours. Welsh was later pronounced dead.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Marty Bilek said both Welsh and a deputy fired their weapons. Bilek would not say which weapon killed Welsh.

Bilek also declined to name the deputy, who has been placed on leave.
