Worried about nitrates in your private well?
During Husker Harvest Days, Nebraskans can have their well water tested for nitrates. The Harvest Days events are being held in Grand Island, Sept. 9-11.
For the testing, people need to bring about a cup of water in a clean bottle to the Natural Resources Tent at the northeast end of the Husker Harvest grounds.
The tests are free, and results will available while owners wait.
Doctors say high levels of nitrates interfere with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. Nitrates pose an extra danger to infants and can cause “blue baby” syndrome.
The water tests are sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
