Attorney General Jon Bruning may be poised to set in motion preparations for a Senate bid in the event Sen. Chuck Hagel does not seek re-election.
Bruning called a news conference for today to “announce his future plans for public service.”
Speculation Wednesday night centered on the possibility that Bruning, who has made no secret of his Senate ambitions, may be ready to begin to tentatively organize a campaign. That presumably could include fundraising.
Hagel announced Monday he will wait until later this year to decide whether to seek re-election or pursue the Republican presidential nomination.
While Hagel “has earned the right to take as much time as he sees fit to make his decision,” Bruning said Monday, “at some point, we need to have time to prepare (so) we are able to keep the seat in Republican hands.”
The attorney general was not available for comment Wednesday night. His news conference will be held in the Capitol Rotunda at 10 a.m.
Bruning, 37, was elected attorney general in 2002 and re-elected last November. He served in the Legislature from 1997 until 2002.
