Relatives of some residents of the troubled center in Beatrice for developmentally disabled Nebraskans want more assurances the center won’t be shut down.
On Thursday, state Sen. Norm Wallman of Cortland introduced a bill (LB68) in the Legislature that wouldn’t let the Beatrice State Developmental Center be closed without the approval of the Legislature.
The bill was requested by people who say the center is a good place for their developmentally disabled relatives.
The center has repeatedly run afoul of federal standards and is in jeopardy of losing about $29 million in federal funding.
State officials want to study whether the center should be privatized, but have not suggested they want it shut down.
