Should Nebraska lawmakers spend more time at home and less time making laws at the Capitol?

On Friday, Sen. Mike Friend of Omaha proposed a constitutional amendment that, if put on the ballot by the Legislature and passed by voters, would cut sessions by a third.

In odd-numbered years, lawmakers are in session 90 days. When days off are included, sessions stretch from January into June.

Friend wants to cut those sessions to 60 days. And he wants to reduce the current 60-day sessions to 40 days. Those occur during even-numbered years.

Friend says the change would give more people the opportunity to serve as senators.
