Nebraska lawmakers will hear testimony on a bill that would let police ticket drivers for traffic violations caught on camera.

The Legislature's Judiciary Committee is holding a public hearing on the measure Wednesday afternoon at the state Capitol in Lincoln.

Sen. Tony Fulton of Lincoln introduced the bill (LB496) at the request of Lincoln city officials, who want to nab drivers who run red lights.

Nothing in state law explicitly prohibits cities from using cameras to catch lawbreakers. But the new law would eliminate arguments that officers would have to see the traffic violations before drivers could be ticketed.

That argument arose in Iowa, which is one of 24 states with cities that have the so-called "red-light cameras."
