A three-day break for consumers from the state sales tax is on the table, but the bill would let the state collect the same amount of money.
That’s because retailers would pay the sales tax, under the bill (LB161) introduced Monday by Sen. Rick Pahls of Omaha. Stores could choose whether to participate. And they could advertise the sale as a sales tax holiday.
It would occur during the first weekend of August.
Pahls proposed a similar law last year, but it went nowhere.
Pahls and others say Nebraska is missing out because some nearby states have sales tax holidays. Critics say the bill is misleading because stores aren’t saving money and will likely adjust their prices to pay the sales taxes.
