Most schools meet federal goals

The majority of districts and schools in Nebraska met federal accountability goals of No Child Left Behind for the 2004-05 school year, according to the Nebraska Department of Education.

Of 477 school districts in the state, 145  are required to meet target goals, based on the number of students in those districts. Eighty percent of the 145 districts made adequate yearly progress.

Of the 514, or 45 percent, of school buildings required to meet target goals, 85 percent met all goals. That compares to 51 percent that met 2002-03 goals.

Although all groups improved over two years, including English Language Learners, special education students and racial and ethnic groups, there are still gaps to close.

Jessie Myles, multicultural education administrator, said the results of testing over several years  suggest the schools are doing something right.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean we are content,” he said.

In the past, he said, schools were content to give all kids the opportunity to learn. Now, he said, they must strive for equity in the outcomes, too.
