Lincoln police cited an on-duty security guard on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol Sunday after he hit a car while patrolling the Nebraska Wesleyan University campus, then recorded a blood-alcohol content more than five times the legal limit, according to police.

Jeffrey J. Gossin, 49, was headed west on Huntington Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Sunday when he rear-ended a car as he approached the 48th Street intersection, police Capt. Mike Woolman said.

Gossin, who was driving a Wesleyan-owned 1997 Chevy Lumina, told police he had seen the car ahead of him but was unable to stop his car. He said his brakes were not working.

Officers took Gossin to police headquarters, where his blood-alcohol content was tested at 0.41 percent. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Gossin was then sent to detox. In addition to the DUI, Gossin also was cited for negligent driving.

The Wesleyan car sustained $3,500 in damages. The other car, a 1994 Isuzu Amigo, sustained $2,000 in damages. No one was injured.

Gossin was employed by Securitas Security Services USA, which contracts with Wesleyan to provide security on campus, university spokeswoman Sara Olson said.

Gossin will no longer serve at Wesleyan, Olson said, and the university, unsatisfied with Securitas’ employee review process, is reconsidering its contract with the company.

Securitas’ Lincoln branch would not comment on whether Gossin is still employed, and a Chicago-based spokeswoman did not return a call.
