Lincoln Police Officer Travis McClintick returned to his regular assignment Thursday, six days after he shot and killed a man who was allegedly coming at him with a knife.
Chief Tom Casady said he reviewed an investigation report prepared by LPD’s internal affairs unit, and determined that McClintick acted within policy when he shot Scott Gannon, 38, at about 1:15 on the morning of Jan. 4.
McClintick, a 10-year LPD veteran, was responding to a report of a disturbance at 1745 A St. A caller had told police Gannon was intoxicated and refusing to leave, police said. On his way to the call, McClintick stopped a suspected drunken driver, who pulled over right in front of the A Street house.
As he talked to the driver, a woman came out of the house and called his attention to a man at the steps of the house with a knife, Casady said.
The man, Gannon, allegedly made threatening moves toward McClintick, who shot him.
Casady said McClintick fired two shots at Gannon after he repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife.
Gannon was taken by ambulance to BryanLGH Medical Center West, where he died two hours after the shooting.
McClintick was placed on administrative leave during the internal investigation, pursuant to department policy.
By state law, the death triggered a grand jury investigation and appointment of a special prosecutor. That investigation is ongoing.
