Two motorcycle riders were killed early Sunday after a car driven by a suspected drunk driver collided with them at 84th Street and Havelock Avenue.
Two Southeast Community College students died Sunday when a suspected drunk driver operating under a suspended license turned in front of their motorcycle at 84th Street and Havelock Avenue, Lincoln police said.
Killed were 20-year-old Joshua Milana of Lincoln, who was driving the motorcycle, and 18-year-old Morgan Hohnbaum, a graduate of Centura High School in Cairo.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene, said Lincoln Police Capt. Jim Thoms.
Police jailed 39-year-old Brett Griffin of 2211 Mason Circle on suspicion of two counts of motor vehicle homicide, driving under the influence, driving under suspension, failure to yield the right of way and no proof of insurance.
Griffin blew at least 0.15 percent blood alcohol content, nearly twice the state’s legal limit of 0.08 percent, said Police Sgt. Jim Davidsaver.
Just after 1 a.m., police said, the cyclists were headed south on 84th Street and Griffin driving north when he turned left onto Havelock in front of them.
Griffin was treated for minor injuries. A passenger in the Monte Carlo he was driving was uninjured.
Milana was a student at Southeast Community College and worked as a carpenter at Vantage Pointe Homes. He graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 2005.
Hohnbaum also went to Southeast Community College, according to her high school golf coach, Ron Hester.
“Morgan was very competitive, but she was also very good about being a good sport, and she was a very good leader for our team, too,” Hester said. “She had the kind of personality that would bubble.”
According to Milana’s Facebook page on the Internet, he and Hohnbaum were in a relationship.
According to court records, Griffin pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol in 2002.
Thoms said both Griffin and his passenger were wearing seatbelts. Milana and Hohnbaum were wearing helmets.
