A vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver struck a Lincoln Police cruiser set up at a drunk-driver checkpoint early Sunday.
Leopoldo Maxe, 26, was driving east on Cornhusker Highway at 2 a.m., when he drove over several orange cones before hitting the rear end of the cruiser, Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs said.
The cruiser was parked with its lights flashing, and an officer had just stepped out and had to jump to avoid being injured, Beggs said.
Maxe, 4360 Judson St., was arrested and lodged in the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, negligent driving, no insurance and no operator's license. No damage estimate was available, and nobody was injured.
Suspect sought for two armed robberies
Police searched Sunday for a man they believe robbed two West Lincoln businesses within five minutes of each other earlier that day.
A man with a white cloth on his head came to the door of Doctor John's, 2929 N.W. 12th St., at 2:14 a.m., Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs said. An employee tripped the store's alarm before the robber came inside, showed a silver and black handgun, took $130 cash and left in a green, 1990s Chevy Lumina.
Police think the same man robbed a U-Stop Convenience Shop at 110 W. O St. about five minutes later, then drove off with $248.
The green Lumina that police suspect was used in both robberies has since been found in southwest Lincoln, Beggs said. Police did not release the name of the suspect.
Two children suspected of setting garage on fire
Lincoln Police cited a 12-year-old boy and referred a 16-year-old boy to the Lancaster County Attorney Sunday after the two allegedly lit a garage on fire at 46th Street and Madison Avenue.
The boys were lighting fires in the detached garage and stomping them out before the structure caught fire that afternoon, Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs said. Police believe the boys left, thinking all fires had been extinguished.
Several people called 911 at about 2:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived at the address, they found the garage engulfed in flames, Deputy Lincoln Fire Chief Bruce Sellon said.
Damage to the garage is estimated at $20,000. Both boys were released to their caretakers.
