A speeding stop turned into a felony arrest of a 25-year-old David City man this week.
Travis Ruel was stopped near North 44th Street and Colfax Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. Officer Katie Flood said Ruel was driving a 1995 Land Rover Discovery that had been reported stolen the previous week from the 2000 block of G Street.
The owner estimated that the vehicle was worth about $1,000. Travis was arrested on suspicion of felony auto theft.
Flood said the 36-year-old owner apparently left the Rover’s doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition.
She said it was the second recent auto theft where the owner left the keys in the car.
At about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 4100 block of St Paul Avenue, a 41-year-old left the keys in the ignition and the engine running in a black Chevy Impala to go inside. Ten minutes later, the car, valued at $10,000, was gone.
Flood said it hadn’t turned up by Thursday morning. Police said the car had license plate PWP092.
