An accident on South10th Street shortly after 7 p.m. Monday injured three people, including one who was reportedly in critical condition.

Witnesses said a northbound car was traveling in excess of 75 mph when it rear-ended another car, which was traveling around 25 mph. The speeding car spun around and hit an electrical pole.

Police Capt. David Beggs said three people involved in the accident were taken to BryanLGH West, and one person was in critical condition Monday night. Beggs didn’t know which vehicle the people who sustained injuries were riding in. It was unclear if anyone had been cited in the accident late Monday.

Nebraska Islamic Foundation vandalized twice over weekend

The Nebraska Islamic Foundation, 7125 Douglas St., was vandalized in two separate incidents over the weekend.

Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs said someone spray-painted racist symbols and comments on the building and broke a window on its south side between 11 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Someone also spray-painted a swastika and the phrase “white power” on a car at the site, Beggs said.

The second incident occurred sometime between 11 p.m. Sunday and 11:30 a.m. Monday, Beggs said.

Someone spray-painted racist obscenities, a swastika and “white power” on the front door, Beggs said.

A neighbor living about a block and a half east of the Nebraska Islamic Foundation reported someone also spray-painted racist comments and symbols on his car. It appears to be the work of the same person who vandalized the foundation, Beggs said.

Lincoln man arrested in downtown stabbing

A 28-year-old Lincoln man was arrested early Monday after stabbing another man near downtown.

Police Capt. David Beggs said around 1:16 a.m. officers on foot patrol near the bars on O Street were called to a disturbance at Centennial Mall between O and N streets. When they arrived, officers found a 21-year-old man from Central City covered in blood from stab wounds. The victim had a 4-inch cut on his left arm and a 1½-inch laceration to the left side of his head.

Police recognized two other men at the location from an earlier disturbance on O Street between 14th Street and Centennial Mall, Beggs said. A witness saw one of those men, Michael J. Crook, pull out a knife and swing it at the victim. After allegedly cutting the victim, Crook threw the knife behind a vehicle. Police later recovered the weapon, a 2¼-inch, fold-out blade.

Crook was arrested and lodged in jail on suspicion of second-degree felony assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony, Beggs said.

The victim was taken to Bryan-LGH West, where he was treated and released, Beggs said.

The stabbing appeared to be a continuation of an earlier incident in front of Brothers Bar & Grill, 1339 O St., which involved as many as six people, Beggs said. It was unclear what caused the disturbance.

Sex offender arrested for assaulting Lincoln woman

Lincoln police arrested a registered sex offender who assaulted a Lincoln woman outside of Walgreens in the Williamsburg shopping area.

Police Capt. David Beggs said the 41-year-old victim was walking out of the store at 5701 Village Blvd. Monday afternoon around 1:48 p.m. when Rodney Daniels, 45, of 4910 Adams St., grabbed her breast and himself in the groin area.

Daniels walked away when the victim did, Beggs said.

The victim called her husband, who located and followed Daniels to an area around 48th Street and Highway 2, where police arrested Daniels for suspected third-degree sexual assault, Beggs said.

Daniels, who was convicted of attempted second-degree sexual assault in March 2003, is classified at a Level 3, with a high risk to reoffend, according to the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry. He was released in May 2004 on parole, Beggs said. Daniels’ parole was revoked in September 2004, and he was discharged in February.

Texas man arrested after exposing himself

A 30-year-old man from Austin, Texas, was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly exposing himself in a neighborhood on Rutland Drive.

Police Capt. David Beggs said a woman called police around 1:20 p.m. to report a man who was out of control in front of an apartment building, wearing underwear, exposing himself and yelling at people as they passed.

When an officer arrived, the man was holding a stainless steel scooter as if he were going to use it as a weapon, Beggs said. When other officers arrived, they had to subdue the man with pepper spray.

Police arrested Broughton W. Garrett and lodged him in jail for indecent exposure, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest, Beggs said.
