Sen. Ben Nelson formally announced Tuesday his decision to vote for confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.
“I came to this decision after careful consideration of his impeccable judicial credentials, the American Bar Association’s strong recommendation and his pledge that he would not bring a political agenda to the court,” Nelson said in a brief written statement.
The Nebraska Democrat had earlier signaled his intention to support Alito barring unforeseen developments.
Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel announced his support for Alito earlier.
Nelson said he wanted to await completion of Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on President Bush’s nomination of Alito prior to making his decision final.
Despite Nelson’s earlier clear signals, supporters of Alito have mounted a campaign in Nebraska arguing for his confirmation, including through TV advertising appeals.
The Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Alito’s nomination next Tuesday. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee plans to seek a full vote of the Senate by the end of the week.
