A day after Christmas, Lincoln police arrested a 22-year-old man allegedly behind the death of his 5-week-old son.
Christopher Duffek, 2620 K St., Apt. 6, was jailed on suspicion of felony child abuse resulting in Sebastian Duffek’s death, according to Joe Kelly, chief deputy Lancaster County Attorney.
Duffek hasn’t yet been formally charged. Kelly said a charging decision would be made next week, before Duffek makes his initial appearance on the allegations — set tentatively for 2 p.m. Monday.
Kelly said preliminary results from an autopsy Friday afternoon were in, but he declined to release details about how Sebastian Duffek died.
Officer Katie Flood said police were called to the apartment on K Street at 7:20 a.m. Friday.
Sebastian was taken to BryanLGH Medical Center West, where he was pronounced dead.
Flood said Friday that his death appeared to be a homicide, but the cause death would be released after the autopsy in Omaha.
Flood said investigators continued to conduct interviews and process the scene Friday.
Crime scene tape stretched out across the apartment door and over a Christmas wreath Friday afternoon.
Kevin Hagerbaumer, who was remodeling the apartment next to the Duffek’s, said he was surprised at the news.
“I just can’t believe this happened,” he said.
The couple who lived there with the baby were quiet and never caused any problems, Hagerbaumer said.
“Doing work next door, you could hear them bathing the baby in the bathtub,” he said. “It sounded like they were having fun.”
The son of Christopher Duffek and Josie Trine was born Nov. 15, according to newspaper archives.
