A Lincoln police officer shot a fleeing driver in the arm Saturday night after the man allegedly tried to run him over and rammed two parked vehicles, including a squad car.

The injured man, 18-year-old Brian C. Hassenplug of Lincoln, was later taken into custody at 2740 Orchard St. and taken to a Lincoln hospital, said Police Chief Tom Casady. No information on his condition was available.

The incident occurred after officers were called to a disturbance outside apartments near 4300 Cornhusker Highway around 5:30 p.m. That's when an officer said over the police radio that shots had been fired, and someone had tried to run him over.

Casady said two vehicles, believed stolen, sped off as officers arrived at the scene, and that one of the fleeing vehicles tried to hit an officer and hit the two cars.

The officer, who wasn't hit, fired a single round, Casady said. The shot hit the driver, who continued to drive away.

The unnamed man was later arrested. He was wanted on a felony warrant from Lancaster County for possession of burglary tools. He was also arrested for possession of stolen property and a parole violation.

Casady said the officer involved remained on duty. The officer was being interviewed at the police station Saturday night. Casady said he would then go home.
