Kris Miller, a native of Lincoln who now works at the Lick Observatory, will talk about astronomy and his job at a special presentation on Oct. 7.

Miller’s talk — “Things I Only Dreamed of as a Kid: New Science at Lick Observatory” — will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at Hyde Memorial Observatory in Holmes Lake Park.

Admission is free. Miller’s presentation will last about 25 minutes and will be given several times throughout the evening.

As a teen, Miller was a member of the Prairie Astronomy Club. He received a  bachelor of science degree in physics and astronomy at Western Kentucky University and a master of science degree in physics from Vanderbilt University.

Miller worked in Silicon Valley, Calif., putting his physics background to work reducing electronic noise in computer microprocessors. Since 2003, he has worked at Lick Observatory on the summit of Mt. Hamilton, east of San Jose, Calif.

His job includes preparing astronomical equipment for research and operating the 120-inch Shane telescope at night.  In his spare time, Miller likes to use the 40-inch Nickel telescope to search for binary asteroids.
