Nebraska will receive more than $2 million from federal stimulus money to assess and clean up underground storage tank petroleum leaks.

The Environmental Protection Agency says leaking underground tanks can release petroleum or other hazards into the soil and can contaminate groundwater, the source of drinking water for nearly one-third of all Americans.

The $2.27 million Nebraska will receive is part of $197 million in stimulus funds going to states to deal with leaking underground petroleum tanks.
