Business slows on old theaters' final day

Moviegoers trickled in the doors of Lincoln's three downtown theaters early Thursday evening as light rain fell down outdoors.

Employees at two of the theaters reported a slow start to business Thursday, the last day of business for the three theaters.

Most of the movie houses' films will transfer over to the Grand Theatre. Friday is the official opening for the 14-screen megaplex at 11th and P streets. | Parking, Tickets and Vital Stats on the Douglas Grand | Few tears for old theaters |

Popcorn, snacks and other food items for the Cinema Twin and the Douglas 3 will be moved over to the Starship 9, said Cinema Twin manager Pat Hruby.

At the Douglas 3, employee Hannah Ledford, 16, said she wished she could let people in for free for the last shows, which start after 9 p.m.

"We haven't been busy for the last couple of months," she said.

But she said she still wishes she could work at the Douglas 3. "We all became pretty good friends here," said Kelsey Harwood, 17.

About 5:15 p.m. at the Cinema Twin, nobody had walked through the doors for the first night shows.

Hruby said the Cinema Twin's movies, "Alfie" and "The Grudge" would move over to the Grand.

This is the second time Hruby has worked at a theater that closed down. She worked at the Lincoln from opening until about a year ago, when its projectors stopped rolling.

Matt Jones of Lincoln wasn't going to let the rain keep him from the Plaza 4 on its final day. He saw "After the Sunset" Thursday.

"It'll be the last movie I'll be able to see in any of the three theaters," he said.

While waiting for some moviegoers, Douglas 3 employees wrote on each others maroon work shirts, saying goodbye to friends.

Hruby said making the switch from the three downtown theaters to the megaplex on 11th and P streets won't be a big change.

"It was kind of a spread out megaplex anyway."
