Lincoln and Omaha face off

Last week, we stole an idea from the Star City Scene message board and asked readers, "Why is Lincoln better than Omaha, and why is Omaha better than Lincoln?"

The responses poured in via email and our comments section. Here are the highlights of our LinOma smackdown.

Note: The Journal Star doesn't necessarily agree or disagree with any of these statements. They all came from reader submissions.

Why Omaha is better than Lincoln

Omaha is several times bigger than Lincoln.

Old Market, Freedom Park, Creighton basketball, Taste of Omaha, the Gene Leahy mall, Qwest Center, shopping, suburbs, better jobs/job market, better traffic flow and coherent roadways, better concert venues (big and small) and better performers at the venues (big and small), better bars and nightlife, more progressive in nature, UNO, more four-lane streets.

Lincoln was once a community. Now it's a "bunch of self-righteous fun-sucking ol' folks screamin' for the dang kids to get off our lawn."

When is the last time Lincoln got a band like Coldplay to come there?

Omaha doesn't have that "need to know your business" feel that Lincoln does.

Saddle Creek, Conor Oberst, better infrastructure, smarter stoplights, the Henry Doorly Zoo, College World Series, the Slowdown, Waiting Room, better airport, Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Why Lincoln is better than Omaha

Lincoln is several times smaller than Omaha.

A certain football team.

Haymarket, coffee shops, Tico's, Nebraska athletics, friendlier people, bike trails, parks, the Ross, KRNU, UNL, Children's Museum.

There are actually some pretty good restaurants in Lincoln that aren't chains or Lazlo's.

The Watering Hole's wings, Jazz in June, Barrymore's, Doc's Place, Bread & Cup, The Oven, Blue Orchid, Green Gateau.

Memorial Stadium, lower crime rate, cheaper beer, Ribfest, Lee's Chicken, State Fair (for the time being), O Street culture, Larry the Cable Guy, Journalstar.com, State Capitol, Sunken Gardens.

Other opinions

Both cities are pretty much the same dump.

They are both lovely towns in which to raise a family.

The best part about Omaha or Lincoln? I don't have to suffer by living in EITHER one!

Instead of Lincoln vs. Omaha (can you really compare 250,000 to 750,000 people?), can't we all agree that there is no place like Nebraska?

First of all, whoever ignited this topic is very lame. What's your next topic: "Who's tougher, Batman or Spider-Man?"

Writer's note: Batman
