Well-Oiled Living: Web's best video player gets better

One of the most supremely frustrating facets of modern computing is video playback.

How maddening is this: You're ready to watch a movie trailer or music video or family reunion slideshow, but you either (a) don't have a player that supports the video format or (b) need a new plug-in.

Ugh.

RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, iTunes, etc.: They're all format-exclusive.

The open source freeware VLC media player, however, supports pretty much all video formats, making it one of the Web's favorite cross-platform players.

VLC is now available for download.

The main pull of the VLC player has always been and will continue to be its non-discriminating love for all video formats. But VLC 1.0's got a little sleeker look, a little easier controls and a little more streamlined of a menu than previous versions.

A few new features:

- Instantaneous pausing

- Frame-by-frame playback

- Finer playback speed control

- New audio and video decoders

- Customizable interface controls

Download VLC media player 1.0 for free (legally) at the nearby link.
