Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Our guess is the green beer will be flowing all day — as it should be. To go along with the grog, Lincoln has some musical performances that are tied to the holiday and worth checking out.
Local favorite The Killigans, the band known for is roots-, folk-, Americana- and, of course, Irish-inspired music is celebrating the release of its new CD, “Brown Bottle Hymnal,” at Knickerbockers.
The band will perform at the early all-ages show (6-9 p.m.) with The JV All*Stars and Benefit Of A Doubt and with Ideal Cleaners at the 18-and-over late show, 9:30 p.m-1 a.m.
The Killigans are fronted by Brad Hoffman and Chris Nebesniak. Other band members are Pat and Trevor Nebesniak, Greg Dank and Ben Swift. You can hear more about them on “Ground Zero Live,” a Journal Star podcast available at www.journalstar.com/media/podcast.
For more traditional fare, head to the Lied Center tonight to hear the Boys of the Lough. The Celtic ensemble features players from Ireland, Northumberland, Scotland and the Shetland Islands.
Band member Dave Richardson said the group tends to play a little more Irish-themed music on St. Patrick’s Day. (See story on Page 12.)
More traditional Irish music can be heard Saturday night at The Loft at The Mill when local band Paddywhack reunites for a LAFTA concert.
The group was big in the 1980s with a loyal following. The members recently got together and recorded a new CD, “Something Old, Something New.” Many of the cuts will be heard at the special concert. (See story on page 25.)
On screen
“V for Vendetta,” which opens in three Lincoln theaters tonight, has blockbuster written all over it.
The Wachowski brothers, the brains behind “The Matrix” trilogy, have crafted a mesmerizing screenplay from the Alan Moore/David Lloyd graphic novel, which tells the story of freedom fighter (Hugo Weaving) and his unlikely ally (Natalie Portman).
Journal Star reviewer L. Kent Wolgamott gave “V” four stars, and for good reason. (See review on Page 4.) I caught a screening of the movie in Omaha Tuesday night and agree with him. The flick has enough to keep both casual and hard-core comic book fans interested.
On stage
If you love Shakespeare, the upcoming week is a great one for you.
The New York-based Aquila Theatre Company will be in town with its version of “Hamlet” on Thursday and next Friday at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
Aquila begins its stay Tuesday with a performance of the Robert Louis Stevenson horror classic “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.” (See story on Page 16.)
The Flatwater Shakespeare Company begins its run of “Macbeth” on Thursday at the Haymarket Theatre. The tragedy, directed by Bob Hall, stars George Hansen and Melissa Lewis.
