Best bets, 10/22

I didn't catch the Hacienda Brothers on their first trip to Lincoln. But after the reports I got about those shows, you can be sure I'll be at the Zoo Bar sometime this weekend when they return.

I heard nothing but raves about the classic country swing that Dave Gonzalez of Paladins fame and Chris Gaffney brought to town. Their ultracool retro country had the bar full by Saturday night, just on word of mouth. That's the best endorsement any band can get.

The three nights of the Hacienda Brothers — they started their residency Thursday — mark the kickoff of a sure to be fun couple of weeks at the Zoo. On Wednesday, Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs roll into their favorite club for a five-night stand on Bacon's 20th anniversary in the music biz. I talked to Bacon earlier this week. You can read more about what he has to say about his career, his influences and the Zoo on Page 10.

The other show of note this week is set for Sunday night at Duffy's Tavern. That's where local bands Rent $ Big and Her Flyaway Manner will put on what is sure to be a rockin' show.

On screen

The most interesting film opening in Lincoln this week is "I ¤ Huckabees," the very strange comedy about existential detectives from director David O. Russell. It's funny in places, frustrating in others and never less than thought-provoking. It's playing only at the SouthPointe Cinema.

On stage

Just in time for the election, the Capitol Steps are returning to Lincoln. The Washington, D.C.-based comedy troupe pokes fun at politics with songs like "You're So Vague" and "Iraq Around the Clock." Their targets are bipartisan, and the show is always plenty of fun. The Capitol Steps will be at the Lied Center for Performing Arts on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Fearless football forecast

The rollercoaster ride that is Nebraska football in the 21st century continues this weekend in Manhattan, Kan. After last Saturday's romp over Baylor, fans are optimistic that the Huskers can head south and knock off Kansas State, which is struggling with a 2-4 record. But K-State gave Oklahoma everything it wanted last week, and hapless Baylor cranked out 400 yards of offense and put up 27 points on the Nebraska defense. A couple of turnovers this week, and it's bye-bye Big Red. Kansas State 24, Nebraska 10.
