We’ve all been told to toss anything that’s outdated, but how about those old organizing rules that don’t fit your busy, fast-paced life anymore?
Here are some new ideas that will keep you on track, courtesy of Woman’s Day magazine:
Old school: Follow a to-do list.
Today’s take: Most people create to-do lists but never get to them.
Instead of writing tasks on the back of an envelope and jotting down appointments in your planner, register with a Web site that allows you to set an automatic e-mail reminder on significant dates so you can send a card, buy a gift or just remember to call your loved one.
Old school: Process the mail every day.
Today’s take: As long as you’re on top of your bill paying, make mail management a weekly chore. Scan the mail for anything urgent each day, recycle or throw away junk and drop the rest into a basket or tray. Go through the basket once a week to sort the contents.
Old school: Keep a shelf or closet stocked with generic gifts for last-minute presents.
Today’s take: In most cases, giving generic presents such as scented candles or floral scarves just doesn’t work.
When you’re in a pinch, go online and buy a gift card from a store your friend loves or a movie or restaurant gift certificate.
Have the gift card sent to you so you can slip it into a birthday card.
If it’s really last minute, many sites can instantly e-mail your pal an electronic gift certificate.
